Yeh, thanks FAST. Shoot it over (gmail please) and I'll test it out on the new rips I've done. Maybe it's just the new games that don't like the V1.29 of NDSTool. I'm still using the same version that I've always used.
Me too please. I'm wondering if Brain Age will work if rebuilt under the older ndstool....

@cracker I doubt a build/rebuild would work but I did get the demo working on another DS via the download station released a little while back ( http://www.retrocovers.com/advanscene/h ... hp?id=0425 ), I could not really see the attraction though.
I figure it's worth a shot. It worked for Feel the Magic and a couple other games.
It's actually kinda fun to solve math problems as fast as you can, etc. I checked it out on my old flash cart that I gave my nephew and I could definately keep it on my cart at all times -- if I had a cart that supported SD, etc that is...

Also, for bleach ds, ive got it down to around 50mb by deleting the sound, there is one big sdat for this. Ive extracted the sdat and found a ton of strm files that coutain story mode and stage music.
It has been a while since I made any new rips so I thought I would give this a go, I replaced the sound and it is now 25.4 megs. The gameplay does however seem to suffer for the lack of sound so I will see if I can simply rip the soundfile of it's larger/more unecessary sections.
I managed to splice in some audio into Tony Hawks with a hex editor and the copy /b command but the codec or options I used were incompatible (raw PCM in .wav header removed) so I got a nice load of noise/ a sound that surpassed any death/black/necro metal the world has ever seen.
And obviously a rom. Only SSEQ files can be made into mid but this covers about 60% of the roms (and this is the very defintition of a conservative estimate).
Grab the .sdat file with NDSTS (you could also use NDSTool for this but this way is potentially easier.
Having got your shiny sound files (normally they are called sound_data.sdat and are located in an obvious directory name like sound) you will have to rip the sseq files from it.
Have sdattool.exe and your sound file in a directory
Use sdattool.exe with the following DOS command
Code:
sdattool -x sound_data.sdat
(obviously change the sound_data.sdat part if your soundfile is not called that)
Up should come a sound_data directory, in the sound_data\Seq directory hopefully is a bunch of .sseq files in it.
Extract ssequtil-20051122.rar to a directory and in the bin subfolder is a program called sseq2mid.exe. Drag some .sseq files onto it and in the directory the .sseq files came from should be some .mid files which you can play/copy/convert/whatever.
I will see if I can get a guide set up to other sorts of files but this should help a few people.

How do I tell what files are the text files after disassembling the rom? I would like to do a translation for a couple roms and need to know what files contain the in game text.

Just off the top of my head (and it is frustrating as there are several more on the tip of my tongue) .bmg: new super mario brothers and Animal crossing (called .bmg.fre or .bmg.eng etc for the Eu version of NSMB), .msd (FF3 and I think several other Square-Enix RPGs), .nsdm and other four letter extension files are not normally text (if you see a file with the same name but different extension it is a good bet it is some graphics and a palette.
Your other best bet is to look at the names of the files menu_title.qaz and such as that is a good clue, coming off the .bmg one a lot of Euro roms have their language abbreviated in the name of extension.
Bear in mind some menus are graphics (this is especially true for puzzle games with little text), on the flipside though I have lost count of how many roms use shift_JIS, Unicode, ASCII or Capcom's table that has the lower case being the uppercase ASCII in my editor (upper case being the first bunch of chars and easily extrapolated from the text file). If a font is not a standard one like that they are almost always relative (one letter alphabetically after the other) and text is not that often compressed.
I will however go out on a limb and openly wonder if a Pokemon title is the one you want luney to which I say good luck as one dark day I poked around the internals to see if could do some damage and I have a sneaking suspicion it is not a relative font (maybe first character to appear or most common) and maybe even compressed text. Of course the game has no Kanji that I saw which is a strike for the easy life.

You would be correct. I have opened several files with a hex editor and found that alot of them contain some text. I'm mainly interested in the dialogue though. The menus would be nice as well. After looking around the files a bit I have to admit, it is very discouraging. It's easy to understand why no translation patch exists yet. I keep searching in google and hoping though. I want to play the games and really do not want to wait until April to do so. I have started Diamond with a walkthrough but without knowing what is being said, the game loses alot of it's appeal. The storyline is half of what makes them fun to play.
