We get a fairly large amount of spam per day, you just had the misfortune of appearing before it got deleted.

I run a phpbb2 board and there is an "anti-robot" addon/mod you can get. It lets you put in some obvious questions, which it randomly asks. If you fail it, you don't get to register. For example:

Q: What is 2 + 2?
A: 4

Q: Are you a bot?
A: No

Q: Do chickens have lips?
A: No

Q: What is the unladen air speed velocity of a swallow?
A: African or European?

Slade said that the board is run on a very old version of phpbb and that it would be an insane amount of work in order to update it. Also sosuke has his own site still going on too and changes Slade made in the past to try to prevent bot abuse caused some problems for sosuke and he was understandably upset about that.

The phpBB2 guys offer an "patch" version which should bring almost any version up to date. It is merely a diff file of the changes between version X and version Y, which means that any custom modifications that have been done *should* stay.

I think I'd rather have up-to-date, generic phpBB2 forums than an outdated but spammy "customized" forums myself.
