This thread is only applicable to EZ5i users, it is not to be confused with the bootstrap updates of the earlier EZ5 models. From now on this will be the thread for discussion of this feature, the location for news of updates to it and links to downloads for it.
Please note at present this has nothing to do with game compatibility, game compatibility is determined by the loader updates which all models have. As of v101 though it does change how the cart functions somewhat.
Explanation/guide. The EZ5i, unlike most other previous carts, is able to update the core/internal loader (ostensibly as a means to counteract any DSi/3ds updates) which controls how the EZ5i interacts with the DS and memory card as well as the internal hardware. To use simply extract the .nds file to the root of the card (the first directory as in e:\ or wherever your card reader puts the memory card) run it and follow the on screen instructions. Users are strongly advised to have a fully charged DS before undertaking this. If your cart says no need to update then check this thread and look for some answers first: sometimes the EZTeam release updates for specific hardware revisions that do not have updates for other revisions in but it could also be a bug. If you manage to mess up the update (or it errors out for some reason- various updates have been a bit buggy) there are unbricking programs that you can use on a DS and DS lite. Here is a video showcasing the fix for 1.4 but it also shows the update procedure:
3ds compatibility came with the v103 firmware update
A note on DSi 1.4 compatibility
V11- the first one- released as a beta to the forums here but not spread v12- the first one that got spread and the current version for the [805] hardware revision of the EZ5i. v13- closed beta that fixed a bug with the [705] hardware revision and SHDC v14- public re[/lmgtfy]lease of firmware that fixed bug with the [705] hardware revision and SDHC. v15- public release aimed at fixing some issues with the DSi LL. Note v13 and v14 are not compatible with the [805] (it will just say does not need to update), v12 has the bug but it will update both the [705] and the [805]. v101- new unified firmware for all EZ5i models. Should fix issues with DSi and DSi XL/LL in all regions and models. Adds CRC checks for writes to internal FPGA- massive speedup in writes. Adds 0x8000 emulation at hardware level- a common AP method bypassed. v103 also added 3ds compatibility. v104 added support for DSi 1.4.2 firmware and Chinese 1.4.3 As of kernel 2.0 RC8 the hardware version is displayed in the loader and running an update will tell you your hardware revision. v105 added support for 3DS firmware 2.1.0 in all regions v106 added support for DSi 1.4.3 international (Chinese firmware 1.4.3 was earlier). It did however come with a risk so people were advised to stick with v105 for now. A new updater was made which gave us v106a was made a few days later.
v108 added support for 3ds firmware 3.0.0.6 (DSi and 3ds compatibility was maintained until present (3ds 4.0.0-7 from April 25th/26th 2012)) v108a got released as a quick bugfix in the installer (some people got errors and had to use the unbricker)- it is still v108 though.
EZ5i firmware update (17-12-2009) aka v15 The EZTeam have released v15 of the EZ5i internal firmware making it the seventh public release of EZ5i internal firmware. Icon still changed from EZ5 logo to Tak.
to check the hardware version, you can go the system setting while using the kernel above 2.0 RC8, or the firmware updater will display it on the lower screen.
update: Improve the compatibility with DSi LL
for example: zelda soul track, without update, no opening. updated, all ok.
EZ5i firmware update (22-08-2009) aka v14 The EZTeam have released v14 of the EZ5i internal firmware making it the sixth public release of EZ5i internal firmware. Some users of the v11 and v12 firmwares (which brought the DSi 1.4 fix) reported some games had speed issues with class 2 SDHC and the [705] hardware revision (a fairly common one) causing lag and some freezing where it did not before.
Changelog/release notes This update fixes freezing problem with some memory cards and the EZ5i. Please note it is only for the [705] hardware revision, should you have another then it will say no need to update. Users of firmwares below v11 please note it updates the bootloader and the firmware, you will not be able to downgrade. Users of v11 above it will just update to v14. Icon still changed from EZ5 logo to Tak.
It was reported and confirmed that some of the 705 hardware revision EZ5i carts and various SDHC cards have slowdowns which cause games to crash. It has now been fixed in the V14 update but for future reference: Some people have lessened the effects by formatting their SDHC to 8k clusters (note the panasonic formatter will not do this). On vista or windows 7 it should be a formatting option, XP users can either use the command line format tool appending "/A:8192" to your command or by using the computer management formatting tool (start, run, type compmgmt.msc and press OK, now choose disk management and right click on the drive, the rest should be self explanatory). The issue should not be resolved with the v14 update.
This is the fifth publicly released update also known as v12. Note both V12 and v11 change the icon and text as part of the 1.4 fix (this looks to be the case for the foreseeable future). This loader also fixes the EZ5i to work on DSi with 1.4 firmware (it blocked flashcarts at first) and fix problems with SDHC and the [705] hardware revision of the EZ5i. If you updated to v11 and you have a [705] EZ5i then you will need to find a microSD to update with. Also added is a block against downgrading which would brick your EZ5i as it the bootloader changed. If your DSi is already at 1.4 then you will need a DS, DSlite or DSi with a firmware lower than 1.4 to run it. The procedure takes about 30 seconds. Filetrip download EZ5i firmware v12
EZ5i firmware update (13-08-2009) v11 This is the fourth publicly released update also known as v11. This loader fixed the EZ5i to work on DSi with 1.4 firmware (it blocked flashcarts at first) but it has problems with SDHC and the [705] hardware revision. If you updated to this and you have a [705] EZ5i then you will need to find a microSD to update with. As such this will not be mirrored here but if you especially want it for archival PM a moderator and they can try and get it for you.
EZ5i firmware update (30-06-2009) v9 This is the third publicly released update also known as v9. This is another update that aims to fix problems some users have with the 2.0 kernels, note you will also want 2.0rc3 or newer for this once you have updated.
EZ5i firmware update (29-06-2009) v8 This is the second publicly released update also known as v8. This aims to fix problems some users have with the 2.0 kernels, note you will also want 2.0rc2 or newer for this once you have updated.
EZ5i firmware update (11-03-2009) v5 This is the first publicly released update, also known as v5 This update aims to fix some problems with SDHC reading and fix detection of the EZ5i in the DSi a small number of users have had. If you do not have any problems with detection or your memory card there is no need to update.
A note to finish- there was an extremely rare hardware revision known as the v1000, this was made before the other models and should not really have left China (a handful have surfaced over the years). These can not be updated but it can use the kernel updates for the other lines just not the current 3.0 kernel. In China there is an exchange policy if you happen to be there but outside China shipping will probably render it a costly exercise (more so than a new EZ5i) so do with that what you will.

If you run the utility, and you don't need the upgrade it will tell you. I think it will advise of the current level then ask if you want to continue with the upgrade, if you are below the level to which it will upgrade you.

I just updated my EZFlash firmware... and now I can run "Nintendo Browser DS" properly without any patch applied!!!!
Not if you have the 3in1 version 3, tried to update, nothing, card still not recognized. Still no fix for the rumble and the browser if you have the v3 version. I have the v5 core update and the beta10 software.

Midicase on IRC chan has tested his ez 3in1 Plus with the ez5i running the last firmware v5 and all is fixed for him, so pehaps you have a defective unit ? Can you try to flash a 16MB GBA game in PSRAM to see if it's ok ?

No problem loading a 16MB GBA game into NFlash and/or PsRam, but still can't start the browser, can't find the 3in1 and no rumble support, selected rumble, started Metroid Prime Pinball, I could feel the DS rumble once, but can't select rumble under options. I have a brandnew EZVi and a new 3in1.

If you can run GBA games from PSRAM which is the memory used by Opera then there is no explanation why you can't run the browser properly. Is you rom clean ? When you launch the rom, is the GBAlink ON displayed on touch screen ?

GBALink is On, I tried the clean japanese version, the Clean European version, and two different patched versions, they all say Memory Expansion Required. I can use the 3in1 plus together with my R4DS card without any problems, so the 3in1 is working. Dont know what can be the problem, the beta10 version?, the Core v5?
btw. tried Metroi Prime pinball with the R4DS and rumble is working, so the card is OK

Really strange. The firmware v5 is supposed to fix the use of all ez 3in1 versions. Perhaps you can try to do the update again in case it's not done properly ?

It says I am already at version 5, can't update again. Dont know if it makes any difference, I have a european DS (no DSi), I live in the Netherlands, maybe that can make a difference???
